At Caring Excellence, we are privileged to care for individuals and families during some of life’s most challenging seasons. While we often hear words of appreciation from our clients and their loved ones, every now and then a moment comes along that reminds us just how meaningful those relationships truly are.
Recently, we had the opportunity to provide dinner and speak at a Parkinson’s Support Group meeting hosted at Gateway Rehabilitation Hospital in Florence, Kentucky. The group brings together individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, along with their spouses, caregivers, and loved ones, creating a supportive community where people can share experiences, resources, and encouragement.
As rewarding as it was to connect with the group, the evening held an unexpected and deeply touching surprise.
One of our former clients’ widows, Nancy, attended the meeting specifically because she learned that Caring Excellence would be speaking. Nancy’s husband, a longtime member of the Parkinson’s support group, passed away in April. During his final months, our caregivers had the privilege of being by his side, providing compassionate care and support for both him and his family.
Since his passing, Nancy has remained connected to Caring Excellence and has even referred friends to us who are now receiving care from our team. What we didn’t know was that she had not attended the support group since losing her husband.
When she saw that Caring Excellence would be presenting, she contacted the hospital and asked if she could attend and share her experience with the group.
Nancy stood before the room and offered a heartfelt testimonial about the care her husband received and the impact our caregivers had on their family’s journey. She spoke about the compassion, dedication, and kindness our team demonstrated throughout one of the most difficult times in their lives.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
As if we weren’t touched enough, Nancy left us a thoughtful review with some special caregiver mentions.
For our team, this was an incredibly moving reminder that caregiving is about so much more than assisting with daily tasks. It’s about building relationships, providing comfort, preserving dignity, and supporting families every step of the way. We are grateful to Nancy for her courage in sharing her story and for allowing us to be part of her husband’s journey. Her words were a wonderful surprise and a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
