Soccer, Service, and Community: Caring Excellence Owner Brings Hope to Cuellaje, Ecuador

This trip was more than just about soccer. It was an opportunity to connect with people from a different culture, share encouragement, and offer hope through sport.

Marcus O’Malley, Owner/Director of Caring Excellence Northern Kentucky, and his son Dailey traveled this July as part of a 9-member team to Cuellaje, Ecuador — a small village in the cloud forest of the Intag Valley — for a soccer-focused mission trip.

Bringing Soccer and Community Together

The purpose of the trip was to support local missionaries by offering soccer clinics for children and running an adult tournament for the town. Many of the children in Cuellaje have a passion for the game but have never received formal training. The clinics provided an exciting opportunity for them to learn new skills, build confidence, and connect through the sport they love.
The adult tournament proved to be a highlight of the visit, drawing over 100 people for the final match — an impressive turnout for a village of about 400 residents. The community’s energy and enthusiasm created an unforgettable atmosphere.

Building Relationships and Partnerships

As part of their visit, Marcus presented a Louisville City FC jersey to Ned Cresswell, President of the Parish Council of Cuellaje. Cresswell, a dedicated community leader, works to protect the area’s traditional values and natural environment while fostering community spirit.
The local government warmly embraced the mission trip, actively partnering in the event and promoting it throughout the week via their official social media channels. Their involvement played a key role in making the trip a success and ensuring strong community engagement.

A Trip Full of Purpose

For Marcus and Dailey, the trip was more than just about soccer. It was an opportunity to connect with people from a different culture, share encouragement, and offer hope through sport. The bonds built with the children, families, and community leaders in Cuellaje will be remembered long after the final whistle.

It was amazing to see how much joy the game brought to everyone we met,” Marcus said. “Even though we came to teach soccer, we left having learned so much ourselves about generosity, gratitude, and community.”
